The Many Faces Of Max

So close to the time that I was coming to the end of my previous contract, I started writing a script for a short. It's based on a children's book I was developing and though I knew that the book would be super fun to do, I get a spark of excitement from the prospect that maybe, just maybe I could animated a little something something.

These are some of the progression designs for one of my main characters. His name is max. You may have seen him in a few of my previous posts in development form. Any way, this is him. You may also see the name of the project on the bottom of his design sheet as well. You'll find out about who BOOGIE is later.

For now, enjoy checking out the progress stuff here. The last thing I have to do is to taper off some of the line work to give it a thick and think quality for some of the details. If you know anything about designing in flash, you never want to totally convert your lines to fills until you're sure that you are done. I like keeping a "line" version of my characters so that I can always grab parts from it if I need to down the road.

More characters to come. I think you'll really like who's coming next.

1. Original version. Max is 11 so I was playing with a neck vs no neck to see which looked older. Also for all you hip hop fans, notice the little thing around his neck, its a Jesus Piece.

2. Next I did a rotation with the older looking version.

3. He didn't feel as Wacky as I wanted him too so I made his limbs a lot thinner and more noodly. Based on the animation style that I am going for, I figured it would be easier to manage if he didn't wear shorts. So I gave him pants.

4. I wanted Max to feel really polished. He's a good kid, a sweet kid. The other versions made him look a bit more like he would be a bit "Bart Simpson" ish and I didn't want that for him. I also wanted him to feel trendy like the fashion blogs I love to follow so I gave him a bit more of a fashion forward outfit.

5. This is the final version. In this the only difference is that I changed his hands so a more streamline design. I did love the wacky fingers, but not for the relaxed poses.

They're forcing me to draw!!!!!

While watching romantic comedies with my wife, these little guys came pouring or if my head.

They want me to keep drawing them.... or else.
